Our Story
Why Close Up!? Why Chamber Music? Why a Salon?
Close Up! Steinway Salon Chamber Series began with an experimental concert in 2021, as musicians and audiences were beginning to gather again after a long period of canceled performances and separation during the COVID-19 pandemic. That experience had made something especially clear: both performers and audiences had deeply missed the simple act of sharing live music in the same room. It also reminded us that meaningful musical experiences can happen wherever musicians and listeners come together—not only in a traditional concert hall.
The intimacy of chamber music became central to the idea. In a salon setting, musicians could listen, respond, and communicate at close range, while audiences could experience that musical exchange from only a few feet away. With this in mind, Stephen Wirges and Naoki Hakutani presented an experimental salon concert in 2021 to explore what that experience could become.
The response to that first concert revealed the potential for something more. What began as an experiment grew into the idea for an ongoing chamber music series, and Close Up! officially launched in 2022.
Since then, Close Up! has grown into an ongoing collaboration among distinguished musicians from Arkansas and beyond. Now in its fifth season, the series presents programs built around distinctive themes and musical ideas while preserving the intimacy, immediacy, and sense of shared musical experience that inspired that first gathering.
